Upon leaving Split we flew to Toulouse, France, which was an adventure. We had a connecting flight in Munich with not really enough time to make the connection, but miraculously we did! We were literally the last people in line to get on the plane, and our luggage was the very first to come off the conveyer belt. Arriving in Toulouse we took a taxi to our hotel, the Grand Hotel de l’Opera. The hotel was located on the Place du Capitole, which was the place to be as the square was a center of activity with lots of restaurant choices.

Toulouse is the fourth largest city in France and is the birthplace and headquarters of Airbus. The University of Toulouse is one of the oldest universities in Europe having been founded in 1229 after the Albigensian Crusade.

besides eating was taking the train tour through Toulouse.
Another exciting morning. . .we left our hotel to pick up our rental car at the train station. Unlucky us as it started raining! Then the gate would not open to let us enter the parking area, so after half an hour we left our Uber and walked in the rain rolling suitcases to the car rental agency, Yes, Hertz still rents to old people!
On we, actually Steve, drove to Domme in the rain while trying to figure out how to operate our Dacia, a Romanian car brand. After three hours of driving we arrived in Domme, our home base for the next seven days while we explored the Dordogne region.

great room with a wonderful view
Following a lovely dinner in the hotel dining room and breakfast the following morning, we were off to explore the villages. So, I had created this elaborate schedule (color coded, no less) to visit lots of the “most beautiful villages of France.” Great plan, and our first day we visited Besse, Villefranche-du-Perigord, Monpazier, Beaumont-du-Perigord, Issigeac, Cadoin and Saint-Cyprien before going back to Domme. Great plan but absolutely unrealistic! Stay tuned for day two.
